What if my power goes out? Most solar arrays are grid-tied, connecting your system to the local power grid. This setup allows you to use solar energy during sunny days and switch to utility power on cloudy days or at night. However, it’s essential to understand how a power outage will affect your solar panels and home, as grid-tied systems typically shut down during outages for safety reasons. Being informed helps you make the best choices for your energy needs!

Will solar work on my roof? There are four factors that determine if your roof is a good fit for solar: Orientation: For optimal performance, your roof should ideally face south. In the northern hemisphere, south-facing roofs capture the most sunlight, leading to higher electricity production and faster payback on your solar investment. While you can still install solar panels on east or west-facing roofs, they will produce about 75% of the energy that south-facing panels would generate. If you have a flat roof, the panels can be engineered to face due south, regardless of your roof's orientation. Shading: It's crucial that your roof is free of shade for most of the day where solar panels will be installed. Shade from trees, chimneys, dormers, or HVAC vents can significantly reduce electricity production. If you're uncertain about shading on your roof, your installer can use a tool called a solar pathfinder to assess whether nearby objects will cast shade throughout the day. Ensuring ample sunlight exposure will maximize your system's efficiency! Surface: Solar arrays perform best when installed on a large, uninterrupted area. Obstacles like dormer windows, chimneys, vents, skylights, and air conditioning units can complicate the installation and reduce efficiency. Ensuring a clear surface will help maximize your system's performance. Durability: If your roof is over 20 years old, it might be wise to consider replacing it before installing solar panels. Most solar vendors recommend using roofing materials that will last at least as long as the solar system itself, typically a minimum of 25 years.
